Heather Norris
Nicholson has been awarded a Prix de Quebec for her comparative project,
‘Old world traditions… romance’ and modernity: Cunard’s
transatlantic travel films, c.1920 – 35’. Innovative film advertising
campaigns in the early twentieth century promoted Cunard’s routes between
Montreal/Quebec City and Liverpool/Southampton. The award is financing Heather's
research on films held at the Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa and complementary
work on footage held at the North West Film Archive. She will be working in
Ottawa during early January on some of the Canadian-held Cunard material. Screening
of two early Cunard films from the North West Film Archive will form part of
this year's French Canadian film festival at the Duke's Theatre in Lancaster
in January and early February 2007. Some of Heather's broader interests in travel-related
archival film footage may also be seen in Package Holidays as part of the recently
screened new series of Nation on Film (BBC4 digital) due to be repeated on BBC2
early next year. Her book on amateur film is due to be published by Manchester
University Press during 2008.
9 January 2007
An opportunity to see rare archival film footage in Lancaster
‘Old world traditions…
romance’, and modernity: these were some of the essential qualities used
to promote Cunard’s luxury transatlantic passenger steamship routes between
Liverpool and Southhampton and eastern Canadian ports during the 1920s and 1930s.
Fierce competition between rival shipping companies prompted innovative film
advertising campaigns in the early twentieth century and the making of such
films as Travel Cunard Line - Canadian Route (c.1923) and Cunard from Canada
(c.1927). As part of the forthcoming French Canadian Film festival being held
at the Duke’s Theatre in Lancaster, there will be two opportunities to
see rare examples of Cunard footage held the North West Film Archives, Manchester
Metropolitan University. These films show how Cunard portrayed their ocean giants
in their heyday before commercial air travel eclipsed regular passenger sea
crossings of the North Atlantic. Heather Norris Nicholson, a research fellow
at the Manchester Centre for Regional History, Department of History and Economic
History, Manchester Metropolitan University will introduce the screening at
8.15pm on Sunday 4th February 2007.
The festival programme is as follows:
Tuesday 9 January 8.30pm La Neuvaine (French Canadian title)
Tuesday 16 January 8.30pm Snow Cake
Friday 19 January 8.30pm Souvenir of Canada
+ Cunard Line - Canadian Route (c.1923)
Saturday 20 January 8.30pm The Sweet Hereafter
Sunday 21 January 6.45pm Le Confessional
(French Canadian title)
Wednesday 24 January 6.15 Cheech (French
Canadian title)
Sunday 4 February 8.15pm Familia (French
Canadian title)+ Cunard from Canada (c.1927).

BEFORE JARROW: THE MARCH FOR JUSTICE NOT CHARITY
In April 1920 250 blind men set off in three columns to march to London to canvass
support for the Blind Persons Bill, then before parliament, and meet Lloyd George.
This march for 'Justice not Charity' was successful in its aims and influenced
the government to enact the Blind Persons Act (1920).
Despite this success the march has received little attention from historians.
The march from Leeds, Manchester and Newport South Wales preceded the Jarrow
Crusade by 16 years. In an attempt to redress the balance and recover this lost
history the BBC have produced a radio programme 'Before Jarrow', which traces
the march using research into the National League of the Blind conducted by
Francis Salt of the History Department, Manchester Metropolitan University.
The broadcast is at 11 am on Friday 8th April 2005 on BBC Radio Four.
