The noted Oldham journalist, registrar and local historian, Edwin Butterworth, compiled an extraordinarily rich collection of texts between 1829 and 1848, which is now located at Oldham Local Studies Library. The Butterworth Archive, well-used by many noted scholars, remains an unrivalled source for those interested in patterns of crime and public order, social and cultural life, journalism, migration and the development of local government in a region where the authorities were grappling with increasing problems of civil disorder. It also provides rare insight into the role and activities of a prolific regional journalist.

The aim of this day conference is to place this important collection in the broader context of the provincial press; to discuss the qualities which make the archive such a significant regional resource and to explore its potential for future innovative research.
